Department of Community and Development Studies

Dr. Charles M. Kinanga Ph. D, MA, BA is the Chairman of Department of Community and Development Studies.  The Department offers the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as under listed:

Undergraduate
1.    Certificate in Civic leadership and Community Development
2.    Diploma in Civic Leadership and Community Development
3.    BA Gender and Development Studies
4.    BA General
Entry requirements
Eligible candidates for the Diploma in Civic Leadership and Community Development shall be:
(a)    Those who have obtained an aggregate of Mean Grade C+(plus) in KCSE or an equivalent or;
(b)     Holders of KCSE C(plain) plus a relevant Diploma with a credit pass and above or;
(c)     Holders of KCSE Mean Grade C-(minus) plus a relevant certificate and a Diploma from an institution recognized by the South Eastern Kenya University Senate.

Eligible candidates for the Bachelor of Arts in gender and Development shall be:
(a)    Those who have obtained an aggregate of grade C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education ( KCSE) or equivalent or;
(b)    Holders of KCSE C (plain) plus a relevant Diploma with a credit pass and above or;
(c)    Holders of KCSE Mean Grade C- (minus) plus a relevant certificate and a Diploma from an institution recognized by South Eastern Kenya University Senate;
(d)    Those with a degree or diploma from a recognized University or other institutions of higher learning;
(e)    Those with at least Division II in ‘O’level certificate plus three years relevant work experience;
(f)    Those who have obtained at least two principal passes of D plain in A-level certificate or its equivalent.
Postgraduate
MA Gender and Development Studies
These programmes are available in all our satellite campuses and are flexibly offered through various modes of study that take the specific needs of learners into consideration. These modes include full time, part time and institution-based.
Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are geared towards providing opportunities for men and women to establish and advance their careers in the fields of gender, Civic leadership, Community, theology and other related sectors within humanities and development, social sciences and humanities. Our programmes are market-driven and aim at producing highly qualified personnel who can participate meaningfully and effectively to the socio-economic and political development of this country.
Eligible candidates for the MA in Gender & Development Studies
(a)    A holder of at least an upper second class honors degree from a recognized University by
SEKU Senate.
      (b) A holder of lower second class with at least two years of work experience
      (c) In addition to requirements in (a) and (b), the candidate must have attained a minimum of      
            C+ (plus) at “O” level or its equivalent.
The department has highly qualified staff, which possess wide experience in teaching and research and it is committed to excellence in teaching and learning to facilitate student’s ability to understand, integrate, critically assess and apply the gained skills through a practical social transformation using leadership lens as a transformative tool for both their professional life as agents of change in the society.
