Prof. Harrison M.K. Maithya

Prof. Maithya is Associate Professor in the Department Sociology and Anthropology, South Eastern Kenya University.   He holds PhD from the University of London, MA and BA (First Class Hons) from the University of Nairobi, and a certificate in Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, where he is an associate member (ACIarb).  He is currently pursuing mediation course leading to accreditation as a mediator with the same institute.  Prof. Maithya’s area of specialization is Medical Anthropology with research interest in the social and cultural aspects of health,disease and illness.  The specific research areas are: HIV/AIDS, sexuality and reproductive health, childbearing, behavior change communication as it relates to health particularly among the youth, livelihoods in poor urban neighborhoods, indigenous systems of health care, care provision to AIDS orphans.  He has authored many articles in these areas, and a book titled: Sexual and reproductive issues among the Akamba of Kenya: implication for the management of childbearing and STD and HIV/AIDS (2009).
Prof. Maithya is currently the acting Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  Before joining South Eastern Kenya University, he worked in Moi University for over 22 years, where he rose to the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Human Ecology, and was the chair of the department for over 4 years.  Prof. Maithya has carried out many research projects, successfully supervised, and mentored many postgraduate students including PhD's.
